St Kilda is a remarkable place. It is situated on one of the most picturesque points of the Bay a short distance from the city, has safe sandy beaches, and yet for decades was shunned by Melbournites because it was the haunt of prostitutes and druggies. It wasn't always like that. Back in the first half of the century, St Kilda was one of the most fashionable suburbs of Melbourne with grand homes and grand people. Today, it is enjoying a resurgence. The prostitutes and druggies have largely been pushed out by rapidly rising real estate prices and St KIlda is fast returning to its heydays. This bayside suburb is now one of the main tourist destinations and is renowned for its picturesque bayside setting, close proximity to the city, beaches, music venues, restaurants and cafe lifestyle

The lively and cosmopolitan area of St. Kilda, is situated on the coast to the east of the city and is considered to be one of Melbourne's most fashionable suburbs. The main shops and eating areas are found on the busy Fitzroy and Acland Streets.

Fitzroy St was once the haunt for prostitutes, but things have changed. But have they?

Acland Streeet, is armed with all different cake shops, coffee shops, used to be frequented by European migrants in the fifties and still has the fifties feel about it.

It is now the number one stop for backpackers because of the busy cafes and close proximity to St Kilda's beaches

Stroll up and down the strip and you will find people arguing in every language you can dream of except English.

Cakes, Cakes and more cakes, however now some clothing boutiques have discovered this drag and are starting to spoil the village atmosphere, so close to St Kilda Beach.

Just up the hill is The Esplanade which every Sunday boasts an artist haven market with magnificent views onto St Kilda Beach.

One great little coffee shop is literally a Hole in the Wall.

St. Kilda's lively atmosphere draws crowds of both tourists and residents alike. It is a wonderful place offering a diverse range of outlets, although it can be dangerous late at night. However, during the summer it is very popular, offering boat cruises and bike rides.

And don’t forget the roller blading on the St Kilda beach promenade.

Visiting the Luna Park amusement park, built in 1912, is a must! It is a charming historic seaside amusement park complete with a wooden roller coaster and other rides. For evening entertainment try the Esplanade Hotel, which has comedy nights and various bands playing.

Apart from the very popular beach, which during the summer months attracts thousands of visitors, there are a number of other attractions in St Kilda to keep you occupied. Plus, there are several hostels, bed and breakfasts and a number of hotels where you can stay in comfort.

A must is Back of Chapel backpacker hostel, which is a funky hostel 5 minutes from St Kilda next door in Prahran, but where you will find more bars, pubs and restaurants per sq. foot than anywhere in Melbourne
